Rapeseed Wax for Candle Making: Applications and Selection Criteria
Rapeseed wax is a vegetable-based raw material used in candle manufacturing. Different grades are formulated for specific applications, including container candles and moulded candles.
Choosing the right rapeseed wax involves considering the manufacturing process, the technical specifications of each grade and the desired finished result.
Which Rapeseed Wax Should You Choose for Container Candles?
For candles poured into glass jars or other containers, choose a rapeseed wax specifically formulated for container candle production.
Candelis offers two grades for this application: COL40 rapeseed wax and R50 rapeseed wax.
How do you choose between COL40 and R50? Both grades are intended for container candles, but they should not automatically be considered interchangeable. Compare their respective technical data sheets, particularly the recommended processing conditions and the manufacturer's instructions. Carry out trials with your fragrances, wicks and containers to assess the performance of each formulation under your production conditions.
Rapeseed Wax for Moulded Candles: Key Considerations
Moulded candles need to retain their shape once removed from the mould. Wax selection should therefore take into account mechanical strength, shrinkage during cooling and ease of removal from the mould.
Candelis offers COL50 rapeseed wax for moulded candle production. Its technical data sheet also identifies dipping and injection as suitable manufacturing processes.
A wax formulated for container candles should not automatically be considered suitable for moulding. Before starting a production run, check the recommendations for the selected grade and conduct trials using your intended candle shapes and dimensions.
Technical Criteria for Comparing Rapeseed Wax Grades
When selecting rapeseed wax for professional candle manufacturing, consider the following:
- Recommended application: container candles, moulded candles or other manufacturing processes.
- Thermal properties: melting point, drop point or solidification point, depending on the available technical data and test methods.
- Processing conditions: working temperatures, pouring temperatures and cooling conditions, where documented.
- Finished appearance and performance: surface finish, container adhesion or ease of removal from the mould, depending on the application.
- Compatibility with other components: fragrances, dyes, wicks and containers.
- Packaging: product format and quantities required for your production.
When comparing technical data sheets, remember that the drop point is not necessarily equivalent to the melting point or pouring temperature. These measurements should be interpreted according to the test method used.
Before moving to large-scale production, carry out trials using your complete candle formulation.
Buying Rapeseed Wax in Bulk: Planning Your Supply
For independent candle makers, candle brands and industrial manufacturers, choosing a rapeseed wax supplier involves more than selecting a raw material. The chosen grade must also meet your manufacturing requirements and production needs.
